Queen Medb not only instigated the Cattle Raid of Cooley for spurious reasons, she also murdered her own sister. Years later, her sister’s son took vengeance when he killed her with a piece of cheese launched from a sling.
Fionn Mac Cumhaill
The great hero of the Fenian Cycle was Fionn Mac Cumhaill. The Fenian Cycle generally takes place in a less turbulent and violent era of Irish mythological history, although this is only a relative thing; Fionn Mac Cumhaill’s father was killed in a power struggle and the infant Fionn only just escaped.
Fionn Mac Cumhaill was a descendent of Nuada of the Silver Hand, and was connected with other members of the Tuatha Dé Danann. His hunting dogs were the children of a Danann woman who had been turned into a dog, and thus were actually related to him. Although the hounds’ mother returned to human form the children did not, but they were very intelligent and resourceful.
Clearly destined for greatness from the start, Fionn Mac Cumhaill became clan chieftain by means of a series of heroic tests. Along the way he gained his magic banner and sword, and also a bag containing the letters of the alphabet. The latter is significant as it connects Fionn Mac Cumhaill with the bardic traditions and the invention of literacy. Fionn Mac Cumhaill also gained wisdom when he helped the bard Finn Eces catch and cook the Salmon of Wisdom and accidentally ate some of it.
